Dryer Repair – Replacing the Drum Support Roller (Whirlpool Part# 37001042)

screws and secure that to

Hi, Jack from AustinAppliancePros. Today, we are gong to show you how to change the drum support roller on your dryer. It is a pretty easy job. All you need is these tools. A putty knife, a 5/16” snap driver and a pair of E-ring pliers.

Make sure you see how it is done. The very first thing we do before we begin this repair is we disconnect the power to the dryer. If it has a plug on it, simply disconnect the plug; you are safe. If it does not have a plug, from the disconnect switch, turn it off and verify is disconnected to your dryer before you begin.

To begin this repair, the first thing we all need to do is raise the top of the dryer. There are two spring clips, each of them are around three inches from the outside edge. Take the flat putty knife locate them and push in and depress the spring, lift up gently on the top, hold it up.

Now, we will need something to support the top when we lift it up, you can lean it against the wall or have somebody hold it to support it in some manner. Next, we are going to remove the front panel and there are two 5/16” screws that secure the front panel to the cabinet, they are accessible from the back, we will need to remove those and also have the door switch. You need to remove the wires on that and if it has a light in the model that you are working on, you need to remove the wires to the drum light. Take note of the location of the wires before you remove them. You can take a picture of it or write it down.

Just gently lift up the arm of the front panel and I am holding two tabs from the bottom. Set that aside. Next, we will remove the front bulkhead.

It is four 5/16” screws and secure that to the cabinet. Pull the drum back from the bulkhead and lift up gently on it, pull forward. Set aside the front bulkhead.

Now with the front bulkhead removed we have access to the drum and the belt. To remove the drum, we need to release the pressure on the either pulley. Just locate it, right hand centre, push it towards right hand side. Roll the belt off the either pulley. Lift the drum upward forward.

Lift the belt off the drum. Set the drum aside. Now with the drum and belt removed, we now have access to our rear drum rollers. To remove the drum rollers, you need to remove the E-ring that secures it to the drum roller shaft. Lift that E-ring off.

Remove the thrust washer. Pull the roller off. Install our new drum roller. Make sure we have a portion on the hub that says ‘front facing forward’. Slide it on the shaft.

snugly, if they do

Next we put the thrust washer back on. Reinstall the E-ring. Making sure that it snaps firmly into the groove. We are ready to put the drum back in. Before we begin to reassemble the dryer, it would be a good time to take a vacuum cleaner and vacuum up any lint that is lying in areas inside of the cabinet just to make sure we do not have any excess amount in there, which could create a potential fire head.

Next, we are going to take the drum and the belt into a loop twirled around the drum mainly to use as a lifting support. We will lift the drum into place; we engage the rear rollers in this area of the drum. Now we are ready to reinstall the belt. We need to wrap it around the motor pulley and the either pulley; we will do that through the front, the groove side of the belt around the motor pulley. Pull it across the top.

Lift up on the either pulley. Wrap the belt around the either pulley. Short setting firmly on top of the rollers and as we turn the drum we should see the blower rolling. Now we are ready to put the front bulkhead on. To reinstall the front bulkhead, we basically want to push the bulkhead against the dryer drum making sure that the two glides are underneath the lip of the drum then we can lift up and install these two tabs one on each side in the opening in the cabinet.

Now at the same time, we want to make sure we engage blower outlet correctly. Ensure the drum is still sitting on top of the slides. We are ready to install the four 5/16”s axis screws. Reinstall the wires to the light.

Surely you will screw the harness holder. There are two different sized terminals so pretty hard to mix these two to up. Make sure they fit snugly, if they do not, just give them a little crimp with a pair of needle nosed pliers. Now, we are ready to put the front panel on.

Now as we install the front panel, we want to engage two clips at the bottom of the cabinet, two slots in the bottom of the front panel. Tilt the front into place. Reinstall the two 5/16”screws and secure the front panel to the cabinet.

Next, we will reinstall the wires to the door switch. This is where you consult the notes that you made when you took them off. Ensure they are in the proper locations.

Ensure they fit snugly, if not, crimp them with a pair of those pliers. Now we ready to put the top down. To engage two alignment tabs, one on each side, two holes in the bottom of the top. Then two locator tabs on the front. Snap it into place and the repair is complete and that is just how easy it was to change the drum support roller on your dryer.

Thanks for watching and good luck with your repair.
